Beyond These Walls

Serving Detroit Through Faith and Community

St. Moses the Black has always believed that faith doesn’t end at the church door.
The neighborhood around us is our parish too, and we take that very seriously.

Better WAY Detroit calls our building home. Its mission is to provide dignity to people experiencing homelessness by paying them to work at community organizations, building real pathways to steady employment, housing, and healing. They work alongside participants, eat together, pray together, and stay with them on the journey. Better WAY Detroit also provides labor to Focus: HOPE in support of its programs.

Among its initiatives, Better WAY Detroit provides free labor and service to Focus: HOPE, Gianna House, Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan, Pope Francis Center, Mary’s Mantle, St. Vincent DePaul Detroit, City of Detroit Parks, the Holy Family Christmas Store, and many more.

Every two weeks, we host a food drive that serves our neighbors directly. It is simple, consistent, and needed. If you’d like to give or volunteer, you’re welcome.

Our parish hosts a rosary-making project that supports women that are homeless and living in temporary housing. It is a quiet act of solidarity, and a reminder that the smallest gestures of care matter.

We’ve hosted the Suzuki Detroit Violin Project and the Cass Technical High School choir in this building, because a church that is open to its community is a church fully alive.

A STORY

Not long ago, a woman came to St. Moses the Black with nowhere to turn, facing homelessness, abuse, and addiction. Our parish connected her with a local rehabilitation and placement program. Today, she is safe and healing.

That’s what it means to be a community.
